City portraits
Hessen’s towns and cities are as varied and diverse as its regions. They’re often some of the most beautiful in Germany and really worth a visit. There are small villages, medium-sized towns and large cities like the Main metropolis of Frankfurt am Main.
Tradition and modernity both have their place here: Hessen’s towns and cities are characterised just as much by the skyscrapers and bank towers of Frankfurt’s skyline as they are by their lovely timber-framed houses, historic and cultural monuments, castles and parks. Frankfurt am Main is one of the ten biggest cities in Hessen alongside the state capital of Wiesbaden, the documenta city of Kassel, Darmstadt, Offenbach am Main, Hanau, Marburg with its Gothic castle, the university city of Gießen, the baroque city of Fulda, and the Opel and car city of Rüsselsheim.
It’s particularly worth visiting the former imperial city of Wetzlar with its historical monuments from the romantic to the baroque period, the historical town of Eschwege, the spa town of Bad Homburg, Alsfeld with its historic old town, Limburg with its cathedral, the imperial cathedral town of Fritzlar, and the timber-framed towns of Herborn and Wanfried.
